Some pics of my amazing new Coworking space Hub Melbourne.

So last week I moved out of my shared studio space and into a Coworking space in the Melbourne CBD called The Hub. Its an amazing space filled with a diverse range of people working together, collaborating and helping their businesses grow. I’m super excited to be part of this exciting new way of working and already have a few great design collaborations on the horizon with members of The Hub. If you want to know a bit more about it check out this video of the founder Brad Krauskopf talking about how and why The Hub rocks.

Over the weekend I screenprinted a vinyl cover for Melbourne based band, The Royal Jelly Dixieland Band. We wanted to do something special for the vinyl and screenprint it in gold ink on black. It was my first time screenprinting and it was great fun learning a new technique. Raph from the band even came down to help out and print some of his own covers

Just for fun we shot this little short video of us screen printing the covers. It was shot exclusively on my iPhone 4S and edited in iMovie and After Effects. Not bad quality considering it was shot on a phone!

Pretty chuffed to have some of my work published in the Computer Arts Design Studio Handbook. My first time published in an international magazine…woo! The article is about Keeping Clients Happy and I did a little interview on my approach to building relationships with clients. Go out and grab a copy and you can read what I have to say. ;)

There is also a feature article in there on the talented boys from Motherbird so check that out as well. Way to go Melbourne. Represent!

So the last couple of weekends I have been having fun at home with some crafty pursuits. First up I cooked a big batch of tomato chutney and hand drew some labels for the jars to give away to friends. It soooo nice to just get away from the computer for a bit and sit down and draw something or cook in the kitchen. Away from my studio cooking and gardening have become my main hobbies and are a great way to unwind after a stressful day at work.

In addition to the chutney I also made some plants as housewarming gifts, hand drawing some patterned labels to put on recycled cans with a wire loop to hang on the wall. I’ve been using this method in our own little courtyard garden to utilise the empty wall space and fill it with beautiful cacti and succulents. My next challenge will be to go back and make labels for ALL my own wall cans although as you can see from the photo this make take some time as I have amassed quite the collection by now!

On failure, money and being busy.

This Creative Mornings talk by Debbie Millman really sums up some of my thoughts about being successful and following the career path of your choice. Being at the start of my career I keep these points in my mind constantly as I think they are very important to fulfilling your dreams and having the life that you want to live.

Don’t be scared of failure. Most of the time you will fail. Keep trying and persisting. Don’t compromise. Especially as a young person early in your career without kids/mortgage/responsibility now is the perfect time to take some risks and do something great with your life.

Money is never about money. The first thing I learnt from my Entrepreneurial business class at university is there is always money available. If you have a great idea, are passionate about it and can sell that idea to people they will give you money to make it happen. With clients, If a client or someone declines a project over money it means you haven’t made it desirable enough for them to want or sold the concept to them.

Being busy is not an excuse. Busy is a way of organising your priorities. We use being busy or thinking that we are busy as an excuse not to do something we that we really want to do. If you are not doing something that you really want to do you don’t really want to do it. If you really want to do something you will find the time.

Anyway if you have time watch the video as Debbie covers lots of other great points about things she wishes she had known when she graduated and which young and established designers alike should take note of.

Hi Everyone. I’ve just entered the Qantas SOYA awards for the chance to win a trip to Cannes, France, $5000 cash and a mentorship with Vince Frost. It would mean a lot if you could check out my entry and leave a comment which might help me win. Thanks :) http://www.soya.com.au/entrants/10156926
